Real Beauty?

It’s impossible to escape the media’s version of “pretty” and “normal”. What’s sad though is that what is being fed to our young girls’ brains is not real. It’s fabricated, tweaked, computer generated, unrealistic examples of what “beauty” is.

Dove has come out with two powerful, short videos. The first shows just how NORMAL the model looks, & how DISTORTED the final picture becomes. You would never identify these two women as the SAME person:

The second video gives a snipet of all the garbage being fed to our young girls (boys too, but I think girls are the target of the vast majority of this). Girls hear daily that they’re not skinny enough, made up enough, have shiny enough hair, smooth enough skin, big enough boobs, white enough teeth, long enough eye lashes, plump enough lips….does the list ever stop? It’s on billboards, magazine covers, newspaper ads, TV commercials, internet pop-ups, emails (do I really need a bigger penis?). It’s so hard to escape.

I’m glad at least one company sees this crazy advertisement of what’s “ideal” and is doing something about it.
Good for you, Dove.

A Burb Mom Make-Over

I am bad about taking the time to go to a salon.  Not just because I am so busy, but because I just dreaded it.

I was a serial hairstylist seeker.  I have heard it said that it is easier to find a husband than a hairstylist…

Last spring my hairstylist quest ended when I walked into Splurge Salon in the Shops of Highland Village.

*cue the angel choir*

Danna did my color.

Jenna did my haircut and brows.

All was right in the world of Holly haircare.

When Jenna suggested a Holly make-over I was immediately on board. I had thoughts of going a little shorter, going a little lighter and definitely attending to what had become an eyebrow situation.

BEFORE:

When my dear partners here at burbmom.net heard of my make-over plans, they TOOK OVER the plans.

shorter? NO!
lighter? NO!
eyebrow taming? YES & ASAP PLEASE!

These are girls of action (Bianca and Shauna) and I knew better than to intervene…

They wanted drama.
They wanted change.
They wanted Jennifer Garner.

Sure!

Who doesn’t want Jennifer Garner?

And so the process began. Danna worked on my color.

Seriously people, did Holly just post pictures of herself in foil?

Yes she did.

She is taking the telling of this story very seriously.

While I was waiting for my color to color (super technical beauty term), I surfed burbmom.net.

How is this possible?

Because Splurge Salon is THAT cool.  They have Wi-Fi and a computer available for use in spare haircare moments.

Oh, and then there was the eyebrow situation.

Jenna expertly crafted contoured brows from bushy overgrowth. She started with wax.

And then I died.

Whew. I came back to life for the haircut.

And then Jenna used her invisible scissors and special-magic-gun-pointy hands…

OK, she really used real scissors, but it was magical.

And then it was finished.

*drum roll*

*wait for it*

*wait for it*

AFTER:

Ta-dah!

I love it. I am still a little freaky every time I pass a mirror or window but I am having fun getting used to it.

A big THANK YOU to the girls at Splurge Salon.  They did an amazing job with me and my partners’ TAKE-OVER make-over plan.

Splurge Salon is located in the Shops of Highland Village at 1401 Shoal Creek #130.  They are open daily.  You can book an appointment by calling 972-318-0300 or checking out their website at www.splurgesalon.com .
