Cortdera Park in Flower Mound

We love spending time each week at a local playground. This week we checked out Cortdera Park in Flower Mound. It’s a newly remodeled park on Cortdera Dr. which is off Morriss Rd, near the post office. It has a nice playground, a pond, and a big open field. The playground had some cool things we haven’t seen before at other parks. Nicholas loved these climbing disks.
And I don’t quite know if these are for walking on or swinging on but Nicholas enjoyed walking back and forth on them.
And the slides at this park were really cool! Wheeeee!
It’s fun to try new things! Get outside and go to a park you’ve never been to before and see what fun awaits.
BURBMOM: THE BEGINNING

A few years ago I started a blog.
I don’t know why I started a blog.
Why , Oh, why did I start a blog?
I started writing every day. I enjoyed the writing. I enjoyed the online community that developed around my blog and the blogs that I read regularly. Before long I found that many of the people I considered friends were people I had never met in person.
A year and 1/2 ago one of my online friends emailed me to make sure I knew about a group of bloggers meeting in Dallas. I signed up anxious to meet my friends.
As the details formulated, I mentioned that I lived close to the airport and could easily pick up people who were flying in for the weekend. Shauna, the person who was organizing the event emailed me asking where I lived. I replied…
Flower Mound, TX (it is just North of DFW in the metroplex)
When she replied that she lived in Flower Mound too I nearly fell off my chair.
One of my anonymous blogging friends was my neighbor.
We met in person soon after this revelation. Soon after that we met our non-Flower Mound blogging friends for an amazing weekend of fun.
That is how it started. As a blogger writing under the name Texasholly, I ended up with a local friend.
It should be easier to meet local moms.
It should be easier to meet local moms.
It should be easier to meet local moms!
And that is why Burb Mom was created. So much of our life is LOCAL. The places we go, the experiences, the frustrations, the activities, the food, the FUN!
It all starts at home. It all starts in our town. It all starts in our ‘burb.
We created a place where we want to hang out. A website that tells the story of our community.
We don’t just want to tell this story by ourselves. We want you to join us.
Oh! What about that french toast pictured above?
That is a picture of what I ate at the first official Burb Mom meeting (at Le Peep) proving that breakfast is the most important meal of the day…
This was the first post we published when we started Burb Mom in November of 2008. I am re-running it because I am feeling a little nostalgic and mushy.
Sumo Cookies

To help sweeties find unique gifts for their sweeties for Valentine’s Day, I am re-running this article on Sumo Cookies…
One of my very favorite things in the whole world is to find something new. So, when I looked across the parking lot while waiting for my husband to pick me up from the Hobby Lobby lobby and saw a sign for Sumo Cookies I grabbed my phone and Googled it.
By the time he pulled the car around I had found out that they are the makers of ENORMOUS FORTUNE COOKIES and are based here in DFW.
I am a fortune cookie LOVER.
So, the logic next step was to go across the parking lot to see what an ENORMOUS fortune cookie looks like.
Once inside I met the owner Janice Paris. She showed me some of the unique treats that she makes.
It is hard to understand the size in a picture, but they really are pretty big. Most of the big fortune cookies are sold with unique messages inside. Sumo Cookies also will customize what goes into the enormous cookies. They have sold cookies with Hot Wheels cars, miscellaneous toys and wedding rings.
They also make smaller fortune cookies and little gifty treats. It is all quite adorable.
Sumo Cookies have been in business online for about 6 years. You may have seen their Sumo VW bug driving around town. The Sumo Cookie store opened a month ago in the Robertson Creek Shopping Center off Long Prairie Road in Flower Mound.
The Food Network show Sugar Rush recently ran a story on Sumo Cookies –
It is all just a lot of fun.
The other really great thing is that you don’t have to be anywhere near Flower Mound, Texas to get Sumo Cookies. They ship nationwide!
My Little Green Thumbed Guy

He picked out a bunch of different tomato plants and put them in our cart – big red beefsteak tomatoes, Roma tomatoes, yellow tomatoes, orange tomatoes, plum tomatoes, and cherry tomatoes. I told him he had to narrow it down since we usually only plant 2 tomato plants so we have room to plant a few other goodies too. He narrowed it down but somehow I let him convince me that we needed 4 tomato plants. Yes, I’m a softie, especially when it comes to gardening with my little green thumb.
While I was supposed to be helping him put back the other tomato plants, he decided it would be more fun to hide under the display tables. This little guy can have fun where ever he goes!
Next thing I know he is putting more plants into our cart. He put a dying pumpkin plant, a potato vine, a peanut plant and then he tried to put this hanging plant in the cart too. I got the other plants but I put my foot down with the hanging plant. I can not keep those things watered enough to survive a hot Texas summer and they always die way before their time.
We went inside the shop for a quick look around. Nicholas found a fountain. And of course you know the standing rule that states that if one finds a running fountain then one is required to put one’s hand in it!
Nicholas did a great job planting our plants. Here he is planting our strawberry plants in the strawberry pot. This is a challenging task because you have to wiggle the plant through these little openings in the pot. He did a fantastic job. He took his time and was very gentle with the plants.
Party at Boomerangs

We went to Boomerangs today for a birthday party for our friends, Z. and M. They are twins who are turning 3 years old. Nicholas had a blast, as always, playing with the kids on all the cool inflatables.
Sliding…
Climbing…
Acting silly…
Crawling…
Nicholas also loves this virtual reality video game. He has learned from some other kids that you can look under the game machines or in their return coin slots to find lost tokens. So he racked up a bunch of tokens and spent quite a while on this game.
During the birthday celebration, Nicholas leaned over to talk to the birthday girls. He had lots of worldly advice for them, since he is 5 years old and so much older than them
One of the things I overheard him telling them is, “You are three now but just wait. When you turn five, maybe you’ll be able to play Xbox like me.”
I don’t think the girls know what Xbox is but I just love how they are listening intently to Nicholas’ sage advice for them.
Oh Christmas Tree!

If you take a little drive down Shiloh road in Double Oak/Flower Mound area between 407 and 1171, this is what awaits you.
It is bright.
It is beautiful.
It is worth the drive.
It is something that just takes my breath away each time I see it.
So glad it is back this year. I saw it this morning on the way to black Friday shopping...very early.
A Tale of Two Pumpkin Patches
October 8, 2009 by Texasholly

Once upon a time not far from Holly’s house in a popular suburb of one of the countries largest cities was a pumpkin patch. And by pumpkin patch Holly means a large picturesque field where pumpkins are trucked in and laid in neat rows.
Holly and her family visited and enjoyed the pumpkin patch very much. They looked forward to the following fall so that they could visit again.
The next year Holly was surprised to see the WHOLE field full of pumpkins. She couldn’t wait to go visit the super-sized pumpkin patch.
Hey, wait!
It wasn’t just one pumpkin patch. It was now two.
Practically identical pumpkin patches sitting right next to each other.
Holly wasn’t the only one that noticed the phenomenon.
The pumpkin patches noticed each other.
Soon each patch had new signs:
And then some more signs:
At this point some legal action took place that Holly is too tired to review and report back to you. She assumes it involved lawyers, judges and a whole bunch of pumpkin patch proceeds.
She would also like to make the following legal disclaimer: Holly has no further understanding of this case then what is obvious to the general public while driving a minivan past the patches at no more than 50 mph. Nothing drawn in marker should be construed as fact, opinion or slander.
Once the case was settled, things settled down a bit at the patches.
One of the patches received a new name!
And so it went for a few pumpkin seasons. The Patch and Village coexisted in a civil manner. As civil as two fighting children required to sit next to each other.
Then a new sign appeared last fall on the patch formally known as Village:
It appeared they had changed their name to Park.
Why Park?
Holly thinks that it might have something to do with the fact that when you drive from town toward the Patch, you cannot tell that there are two separate pumpkin entities. All you are looking for is pumpkins and a place to park:
That Pumpkin Park is so sneaky it is downright scary.
Our Rotten Science Adventure

Back at the beginning of September, our wonderful friend T gave us some pumpkins to welcome in Fall. Reese wanted to carve one right away, and he assured me he wouldn’t mind that it wouldn’t last all the way to Halloween.
So we carved our pumpkin & put it on the porch to greet visitors.
After a few weeks, our pumpkin, who Reese named Rotty, began to get a little mushy. Reese asked what will happen to it if we left it to rot. Hello, Science Project!
We got a tray for Rotty to sit on so he wouldn’t rot directly onto the porch. We made a journal to record our daily findings. We got to work!
September 12, 2008
Friday, 6:00pm
“Rotty is turning soft like a sponge. Like a KinderChinder. It’s got black mold. It’s getting eaten by a bug & looks black and not so good.”
Reese poked his finger into the mushy parts….
Each day, Mommy recorded Reese’s observations. I drew the outline of Rotty & Reese colored in the mold spots & mushy parts.

September 13, 2008
Saturday, 6:00pm
“Where I stuck my finger it grew mold. The back is all fuzzy moldy. It has bugs. More mold is growing inside. I can’t believe where I stuck my finger got mold!”
September 14, 2008
Sunday 7:15pm
“It’s rotten. It looks kind of ashy. His mouth is getting all rotten. I see a spider on the pumpkin. There is more mold today. I see bugs. They must be looking for food in Rotty. He feels soft.”

September 15, 2008
Monday, 6:30pm
“He’s rotten & smells like a dirt pile. His face is all gooey. You can see where I stuck my finger in. Look at all the pumpkin juice! The back is falling & tipping over. I wish Rotty would stay a little bit longer. His color is black & orange.”
September 17, 2008
Wednesday, 7:15pm
“He is rotten. He is smaller because he’s going down. Inside there’s a lot of mold! It smells like pumpkin to me…and dirt. I don’t see any bugs today. There’s a soft part on his head.”
September 21, 2008
Sunday, 7:15pm
“He’s so small! Not big & bumpy. You can still see where I put my finger. He’s decomposing. Part is soft from decomposing, but part is hard because it dried up. There’s a fly on him. He must eat the pumpkin. The back is sinking fast!”
September 22, 2008
Monday, 7:30pm
“He’s not like that anymore…not full. He looks like rotten eggs. He’s all brownish. Look inside…mold! He is small. I see a Junebug in there…it’s laying in Rotty. I see a fruit fly inside…lots of fruit flies!”
September 26, 2008
Friday, 3:00pm
“He’s not big & tall. He feels hairy. He’s dry. It’s called evaporate. Our guess was wrong. I thought he would turn into goo. We see fruit fly larva from Larva Land. No, really, they came from fruit flies.”
Check out who’s been eating our Rotty!
Even photo editing can make larva & pumpkin guts pretty

This was a GREAT experiment to do together. It was Reese’s first chance at long term observation, and our record book helped record the changes each time we looked. I had to put a note on Rotty that said “Please excuse our science experiment!” because I was afraid our dear UPS lady would think we’re nuts!
